Woman with three children jailed, fine for stealing doctor's wallet

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman with three children was today sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM2,800, in default eight months' jail, for stealing a doctor's wallet during treatment at a hospital two months ago.
Magistrate Mohamad Izwan Mohamed Nor handed down the sentence on Siti Nur Joanna Muhammad Syafiq Teoh, 31, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
The woman, who is unemployed, was charged with stealing a wallet belonging to Dr Liong Ming Feng, 35, which contained an identity card, driving licence, ATM and credit cards, and cash.
The offence was committed at room No 10, Orthopaedic Specialist Clinic, Ampang Hospital, Pandan Mewah here, between 7.30am and 4.25pm on Aug 29, this year.
The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years, and is liable to fine, if found guilty.
In mitigation, Siti Nur Joanna, who broke down in tears, said her husband was also jobless and she regretted her action. She was unrepresented.
According to the facts of the case, Dr Liong received a text message on her handphone, informing that her credit card had been used for purchase of jewellery.
She then checked her handbag and found her purse missing, before going to the police to lodge a report.
A recording of a closed circuit television camera at the gold shop showed Siti Nur Joanna using Dr Liong's credit card to make the jewellery purchase.
