KUALA LUMPUR: The towing of vehicles parked illegally in the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) area is done legally, according to Bumitech Marketing Sdn Bhd, the company appointed to manage the hospital's parking.

Its representative Datuk Seri Zakwan Hafiz Ahmad Ansari said the company was given the authorisation as outlined in the document issued through a tender offered by the Health Ministry for a period of three years beginning May 1, 2016.

He said the tender document stated that the compound rates set by HKL was RM150 for towing and RM50 for wheel clamping.

"The company does not do anything against Section 385 of the Penal Code which deals with putting a person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion.

"The company is only carrying out the responsibility given to collect the compounds as directed and set by HKL and the Health Ministry," he said in a statement, here, today.

On Saturday, police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly extorting money from car owners in exchange for getting their vehicles released. — Bernama
