Feb 17 trial for accused in death of DPM's son-in-law

KUALA LUMPUR: The trial of an O & G specialist accused of causing the death of Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's son-in-law will commence on Feb 17, 2017.
Sessions Court judge Zaman Mohd Noor fixed the date in chambers after allowing an application for postponement by counsel Dev Kumaraendran who is representing Dr Ting Teck Chin.
The lawyer told the court that lead counsel Datuk K.Kumaraendran had to undergo treatment under schedule at a hospital in India.
Deputy public prosecutor Shukor Abu Bakar did not object to the application.
The court had earlier fixed Jan 23 till Jan 27, 2017 for trial. The new dates would be Feb 17, Feb 20, Feb 21, Feb 27 and March 28, 2017.
On Aug 12, Dr Ting, 36, who is based at Kuala Lumpur Hospital and worked part time as an anaesthetist at Imperial Dental Specialist Centre claimed trial to causing Datuk Syed Alman Zain Syed Alwi's death.
Dr Ting allegedly committed the offence when the victim came for dental treatment at the centre in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru, Brickfields here, between 6pm and 9.05pm on June 1.
The charge under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code carries a maximum 10 years imprisonment or a fine, or both, on conviction.
Syed Alman Zain, 44, who was husband to the deputy prime minister's daughter Datuk Nurulhidayah, 37, was reported to have lost consciousness while under treatment at the centre and referred to University Malaya Medical Centre where he was confirmed dead. — Bernama
