KUALA LUMPUR: Is former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang cooperating merely for political expediency?
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak doubts the two political old-timers have formed a genuine partnership even though they seem to be working together in the Opposition.
"You think Kit Siang really likes Mahathir? Do you think Mahathir really likes Kit Siang?
"Dr Mahathir had called Kit Siang an anti-Malay, anti-Islam racist out in the open before. Kit Siang also openly called Mahathir a dictator, among many other things.
"This is the politics of hypocrisy at its highest heights. How can we trust this politics of hypocrisy?" Najib said at the MCA annual general meeting (AGM), prompting chuckles from central delegates.
He said he understood there are times when politics have to be put aside for the sake of moving things along, such as in the recently concluded US presidential election.
Najib, who is Umno president and BN chairman, said US President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump were at each other's necks during the campaign period.
However, Obama and Trump then acted in a civil manner to ensure a peaceful transition of power after the election was over.
Meanwhile here, Najib said the opposition has u-turned so much on so many issues that they themselves seemed unsure of their own direction.
"They didn't just confuse the people, they themselves seem to be confused. We cannot place the future of the country in a coalition without direction.
"There is no common goal between them except for being anti-BN," said Najib.
He said BN is united in working for the people since independence and its component parties have stuck with each other through thick and thin.
Najib said BN operates on the principles of power-sharing and consensus decision making as opposed to the Opposition's constant internal bickering.
While on the subject of infighting, he congratulated MCA for uniting its various factions under the leadership of president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
"This seems to be a new MCA. When I came into this hall in the past, I saw teams A, B, and perhaps even C. Now there is only one MCA. The candidates selected to contest for GE14 will be the best," Najib said.
He urged the Chinese community to support BN if they want to be represented in the government.
