KOTA KINABALU: The State Barisan Nasional (BN) can take the necessary measures needed to resolve the issue of MyKad given to dubious citizens previously, said Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pix).
He said state BN leaders should act on their calls for fresh Malaysian identity cards to be re-issued.
He added that there was no point in blaming others.
Shafie was reacting to Upko president Datuk Seri Madius Tangau’s policy speech address on Saturday calling for the re-issuance of MyKads in Sabah in line with the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants.
Speaking during his walkabout in Donggonggon town Sunday market in Penampang, he said the present leaders are in power and they can resolve the problem.
Tangau, who is also the Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, had shown a video interview of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad allegedly admitting to giving citizenship to illegal immigrants in Sabah during the opening of the congress.
Project IC has caused a political divide in the state with many throwing aspersions on the involvement of the former premier and Shafie has been tainted by such accusations.
The Semporna MP was accompanied by Warisan deputy president Darrel Leiking, who is Penampang MP and Likas assemblyman Junz Wong during his walkabout.
“BN is in power, why blame Dr Mahathir. If they think it is (wrongly issued), they can rectify it. They have the power and authority,” Shafie said.
Shafie said it did not matter if he agreed or disagreed with the re-issuing of the MyKads in Sabah as it was important for them to resolve the problem.
Shafie who formed Warisan after leaving Umno in July, said the response to the party was good and people were keen to work with the party for a change in the state.
