SHAH ALAM: Malaysia came from behind to edge Papua New Guinea 2-1 in a Class A international friendly at the Shah Alam Stadium here today.
The win was sweet revenge for coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee's boys who had lost 0-2 to Papua New Guinea during their Oceania Tour at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Papua New Guinea on June 17.
Despite playing on a wet and slippery pitch, Papua New Guinea seemed to adapt well to the conditions and even took the lead as early as the sixth minute through Nigel Dabinyaba due a defensive lapse by the home team.
Striker Ahmad Hazwan Bakri however, levelled the score in the 20th minute with a swiftly struck volley from outside the penalty box, to give the 5,000 odd fans who had braved the rain, something to cheer.
Though both teams went into the break on level terms, the scope of the match took a positive turn for the home team when Mohd Amri Yahyah converted a penalty in the 47th minute.
Referee Alongkron Feemuechang from Thailand pointed to the spot after National striker Darren Lok was brought down by Alwin Komolong inside the box.
Kim Swee made a number of changes to add punch in attack but the score remained intact until the final whistle.
Today's match marks the final phase of preparations for the National team before heading to Yangon, Myanmar on Wednesday for the AFF Suzuki Cup competition.
In the AFF Suzuki Cup, Malaysia have been drawn in Group B with Cambodia, Vietnam and host Myanmar. — Bernama
