Hindu temples along Jalan Timah vandalised

GEORGE TOWN: Several statues of Hindu deities at a Hindu temple in Jalan Timah here were found vandalised on Monday evening.

Sri Raja Madurai Veeram Temple chairman Michael Anthony said he found the desecration about 6pm when he went to pray at the 180-year-old temple.

"I was shocked to see a statue of Ganesh and Madurai damaged with the debris scattered all over the temple floor," he said, adding that volunteers helped clean up premise which was in a mess with broken pieces everywhere.
A police report has been lodged.

Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, who visited the site, said this was first such incident in his constituency. and hoped police will nab those responsible.
He said he will contribute RM2,000 for the repair works.

Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said investigations will be carried out under the Penal Code for injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.

On July 10 the statues of Lord Ganesha, Lord Muneeswarar and an aniconic of Lord Shiva were damaged at the Sri Muneeswarar Temple in Jalan Tengku Kudin.

On July 4, the Dewa Sri Mathuraiveeran Temple in Sungai Nibong Kechil was defiled after a statue of the deity Mathuraiveeran (warrior god) was smashed while a copper figure of Amman (goddess of Shakti) was stolen.

In June, two temples in Penanti, the Sri Dharma Muniswarar Temple and Muthu Mariamman Temple, were vandalised
prompting the police to setup a task force to investigate.
