32,498 coral nubbins planted since Oct 2013
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 32,498 coral nubbins were planted by the Marine Parks Department since the coral restoration project began in October 2013.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Hamim Samuri said the coral nubbins were planted in 1.09 hectare areas nationwide.
"The coral nubbins grew between 0.4cm to 1.4cm per month. Other initiatives to preserve the marine biodiversity include guidelines to enrich marine resources," he said in reply to a question from Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris (BN-Jerantut) in Dewan Rakyat today.
Ahmad Nazlan asked about government efforts to restore the coral reefs damaged by coral bleaching and human activities.
Coral bleaching is discolouration of corals from brownish or greenish to pale white. — Bernama
