KUALA LUMPUR: The Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) that combines the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and Demerit Point System (Kejara) is expected to be implemented early next year.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said the system was ready to be implemented and fully operational particularly at accident-prone areas.
"More cameras will be installed in accident-prone areas in efforts to reduce the number of accidents," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.
Ab Aziz said this when asked to comment on the system that was scheduled to be implemented in May which has been postponed since.
Through Awas, the demerit system will start when the driver collected 20 demerit points which comes with a warning, the next 20 demerit points will come with suspension of licence while another 20 demerit points will mean revocation of licence.
The system implementation will also include taking pictures of drivers and vehicles including motorcycles from rear angle. — Bernama
