KUALA LUMPUR: Ampang Member of Parliament Zuraida Kamaruddin has filed a defamation suit against Sungai Besar Umno division leader, Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos, over his remarks during an incident which left him bleeding from the nose last Sunday.
Zuraida filed the suit, through her lawyers, N.Surendran and Melissa Sasidharan, at about 9.25am at the High Court registry today.
In the statement of claim, Zuraida said that Jamal had allegedly said to the public and media members on Nov 13, 2016, that Zuraida’s boy had hit him.
Zuraida is seeking for general damages, aggravated damages, interest and costs and an injunction to prevent Jamal from further uttering defamatory statements.
She claimed that Jamal knew his defamatory statements would be published through electronic and print media and online portals, and the statements, in the natural and ordinary words, meant she had incited or directed her party members to cause injuries.
She claimed the words had affected her reputation as an MP.
Zuraida, through her lawyers, had sent a “letter of demand” to Jamal, seeking for a retraction and an apology for the defamatory words.
Meanwhile, Surendran said the suit is in relation to the “bloody nose” incident, in which Jamal, who is also known as the “Red Shirt leader”, claimed he was punched by people, allegedly on the direction by Zuraida.
Surendran said the allegation was untrue and was a serious one.
