PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has been detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) following her arrest today.
In a series of tweets, NGO Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) stated that Maria is expected to detained as no remand hearing was held.
"Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly granted two days remand for all nine suspects under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. Maria not included."
Lawyers Eric Paulsen, Ramkarpal Singh Deo, Sangeet Kaur Deo, R.S.N Rayer and Melissa Sasidaran who represented Maria and the other suspects were denied access to her even though they had been waiting at the Jinjang police detention centre since 10am.
According to LFL, the investigating officer then permanently denied access to the lawyers.
Under Sosma, Maria can be detained for a further 28 days.
Meanwhile at the Ampang Magistrates' court, Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos was been given a four-day remand order.
The Sungai Besar Umno division chief was remanded along with two others to facilitate investigations into the incident at Ampang Point shopping centre.
Following the remand hearing, the trio will be heading to the Shah Alam detention centre, according to their legal adviser Mohd Imran Tamrin.
They are being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, section 186 for obstruction of a public officer and under Section 353.
All three are represented by counsel Mohd Nasir Yusof and Khairul Anuar Kashim.
