ALL cigarettes and alcoholic drinks, except for those bought at the airport and jetty point, are not allowed to be taken out of Langkawi as duty-free goods.
According to Langkawi Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary Loke Cheng Zhi, the customs department's latest duty-free ruling stipulated that visitors who want to bring these duty-free goods out of the island can only buy them at approved duty-free shops located at the airport or jetty point complex.
Cigarettes and alcoholic drinks purchased at duty-free outlets on other parts of the island can only be consumed on the island, he pointed out.
Clarifying some media reports that all cigarettes and alcoholic drinks are not allowed to be taken out of Langkawi, Loke told Nanyang Siang Pau on Sunday that limited quantities of the two items can be purchased at the airport and jetty point by showing one's passport or MyKad and taken out of the island.

"According to the latest customs ruling, cigarettes and alcoholic drinks sold at 54 other duty-free shops in Langkawi are not allowed to be taken out of the island," said Loke.
Under the new ruling, which took effect on Nov 1, each visitor is limited to only three cartons of cigarettes, five litres of liquor and three crates of beer per month.
Prior to that, each visitor could leave the island with one carton of cigarettes and one bottle of liquor purchased at any of the 56 duty-free shops every 48 hours.
Under the new ruling, residents of the island are barred from purchasing duty-free cigarettes and alcoholic drinks from the airport and jetty point.
Loke noted that the customs department has stationed its personnel at duty-free shops to ensure the new ruling is complied with.
