Ex-navy officer gets jail, fined RM40,000 for bribery

IPOH: A former Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) officer was sentenced to seven months' jail and fined RM40,000 by the Sessions Court here today after he pleaded guilty to four counts of bribery involving over RM100,000 in the procurement of naval equipment two years ago.

Earlier, the accused Lieutenant Commander S. Kuvendran, 32, who worked as a Material Control Officer 2, Fleet Supply Depot at the RMN Base in Lumut, changed his plea to guilty to all the charges made against him.

The man admitted to have received cash amounting to RM104,971.97 through a debit card between January and October 2014 from a contractor identified as Mohd Nasir Abdullah, whose company had an interest and connection with his official duties.

On Sept 8 last year, Kuvendran pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here, to four counts of receiving RM104,971.97 through the debit card.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Afifah Yusof prosecuted while Kuvendran was represented by Norhasham Hasan.

Kuvendran paid the fine of RM40,000. — Bernama
