KUALA LUMPUR: Several MPs today voiced agreement for political cooperation between Umno and PAS to strengthen Malay-Muslim solidarity for the well-being of Muslims.
Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (PAS-Kuala Nerus) said that although PAS had its own struggle, the party was open to cooperation with Umno, particularly in the interests of Muslims.
"I feel this subject has been talked about for a long time. We do not see any problem in the matter, especially in maintaining Muslim authority in the country.
"I feel that Muslim authority must be defended by every Muslim," he said to reporters at the Parliament lobby.
He was asked to comment on Umno-PAS cooperation as stated by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom as a speaker at a religious discussion at the Ummah Agenda Empowerment Convention yesterday.
Jamil Khir, who is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said such cooperation was mentioned and called for in the Quran to ensure the survival of Muslims.
Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena) said he would leave the matter to the top leadership of the two parties.
"I feel there is no room for PAS to go it alone in upholding the religion," he said.
Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun (BN-Beaufort) welcomed any form of cooperation for the benefit of the people but said both sides must work to realise it.
"We want to bring development to the people. As such, we want a stable country with a united people who are not too concerned with politics," she said. — Bernama
