Child car seats should be made compulsory sooner, says Rohani

KUALA LUMPUR: Child car seats should be made compulsory before the proposed implementation in 2019, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim (pix).
Rohani said she would meet with representatives from the Transport Ministry and relevant stakeholders on the matter, following the tragic death of a two-year-old boy who was killed in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on Saturday, when he fell out of his father's car and was run over by another vehicle.
“Prior to implementing anything new, we at the ministry will always give the public a certain period of time to get used to it so that they would not be caught off guard.
“However, issues like child car seats and rear seat belts should not be delayed as it concerns safety," she said after officiating the International Conference on Social Innovation (ICSI) 2016 today.
Besides pushing for early implementation, Rohani urged parents to prioritise the safety of their children.
“Parents should always ensure an adult is seated with a young toddler or ensure they are safely strapped to prevent any untoward incidents.
“At the same time, my ministry will continue to push for more awareness campaigns on child safety in moving vehicles,” she said.
