RM50m pig farm to prevent pollution in Paya Mengkuang, Melaka

JASIN: The Malacca state government is in the midst of developing a modern pig farm, at a cost of RM50 million, in Paya Mengkuang, Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, to coordinate breeding activities and monitor river pollution.

State Agriculture and Entrepreneurial Development committee chairman Datuk Hasan Abdul Rahman said the construction of the 20.2ha farm was expected to start at the latest by 2018.

He said the farm would be enclosed and all processes, from breeding to the slaughter of livestock, would be done internally while the lorry transporting the slaughtered pigs would also be sealed.

"We already have investors for the construction of the modern pig breeding farm who are locals and land owned by the Malacca State Development Corporation.

"This farm will use environmentally friendly and green technology in its sewage system which will be built underground and closed with fibre to prevent any pollution," he told reporters at the Rural Transformation Centre in Sungai Rambai here.

He said the farm would gather 36 pig breeders from 40 existing farms that would use biogas from sewage collected from the sewage pool.

In the meantime, he said the state government would draft a new enactment to coordinate pig farm licensing and breeding activities as well as environmental pollution in the state, especially in Paya Mengkuang from next year.
Hasan said through the enactment, existing farmers must submit their farm's plan to ensure the construction of the farm was in accordance to specification set by the local authorities.

"The enactment is still under review by the Malacca Veterinary Department and state legal advisors as well as the local authorities," he said. — Bernama
