PUTRAJAYA: The prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor today attended a luncheon at Seri Perdana, with a delegation of 20 United Kingdom (UK) women from two groups, namely the Asian Women of Achievement and the Women of the Future.
Present during the luncheon were British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Victoria Treadell and Wanita Barisan Nasional (BN) chief, Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Also at the luncheon were members of the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti), heads of women political wings of BN component parties, Malaysian women entrepreneurs and leaders from Malaysian women non-governmental organisations.
In her speech, Rosmah said empowered, successful and influential women must do all they could to coach and mentor potential young leaders.
She also hoped the UK women delegation had an enriched experience and views, especially on Malaysian women empowerment and leadership, based on their visit to Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Treadell told Bernama the UK delegation was on a week-long visit to Malaysia, beginning Monday to have an overview of the challenges facing women in Malaysia particularly in the fields of politics, social and economics.
"The objective of this visit programme is to engage the UK women with Malaysian women from all backgrounds, including civil society leaders, business leaders and academia.
"By the time the delegation leaves the country, they will see Malaysia through different lenses, and with a deeper understanding on Malaysia.
"This can generate new thinking, new ideas and new experiences about Malaysia, among the delegation," she added.
At the end of the luncheon, all women who attended the event held placards supporting an end to violence against women as this date coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The UK's Asian Women of Achievement comprised British women from Asian ancestry, who have made significant contributions to society, business and industry.
Meanwhile, Women of the Future support and celebrate the successes of young British women under 35, and recognise these women as emerging leaders. — Bernama
