Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah : We're opposed to Hudud

KOTA KINABALU: Another Barisan Nasional component party will not support PAS' Private Members Bill on the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) Bill 2016.
Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) said it is opposed to Hudud as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 states that the federation should be secular.
PBRS secretary-general Datuk Dr Johnson Tee said the party's supreme council is committed to reject the Bill.
He said the proposed amendments to be tabled by PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang contravenes provisions of the Federal Constitution, as the country already has its own Penal Code to punish criminals.
Johnson said PBRS believes that an overlap of the existing legal system goes against the spirit of a harmonious society.
"Malaysia cannot have two systems of laws at the same time," he said in a statement.
PBRS President Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, had recently cautioned Putrajaya that the people of Sabah and Sarawak may demand for secession from Peninsular Malaysia if the amendments are passed in Parliament.
