KUALA LUMPUR: Having beaten out the likes of Barcelona superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar, Malaysia's Mohamad Faiz Subri has made it into the top three for Fifa's prestigious Puskas award.
Faiz has already made history as the first Malaysian to be nominated for the award.
He is now in contention to make history as the first in Asia to bag the coveted award given to the most spectacular goal scored in the past year.
The diminutive No 13 scored the physics-defying free kick for Penang against Pahang in a Malaysian Super League match on Feb 16, which saw the ball swerving from the left to right, deceiving opposition goalkeeper Nasril Nourdin, before finding the back of the net.
His wonder strike will now compete with Brazilian Johnath Marlone and Venezuelan Daniuska Rodriguez's goals for the award.
Faiz was initially nominated in the top 10, alongside Messi and Neymar, with fans given until yesterday to vote for their favourite three.
While both Catalan players did not make it to the final round, Faiz's 30-metre knuckleball free kick has now put Malaysia back in the world footballing map.
The Fifa Puskas award was introduced in 2009 in honour of Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s, with past winners including Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Colombia's James Rodriguez.
The public has until Jan 9, 2017 to vote for the best goal, when the winner will be revealed during the Best Fifa Football Awards ceremony in Zurich.
