KUALA TERENGGANU: The National Archive Department is targeting 30 million materials or documents to be documented in its Online Finding Aid (OFA) application system by 2020 from the current eight million.
Its director-general, Azemi Abdul Aziz, said this would enable more researchers, students and general users from anywhere in the world to refer to the archived materials via the Internet.
"The OFA system is a new system to modernise the National Archive so that the public need not come to our premises to find the information and materials for their research or perusal, as long as they have Internet access.
"It is also hoped that with this system, we can popularise National Archive and let the public know what we have to offer," he told Bernama after the launch of the lecture on the development of Malay politics in Terengganu by Terengganu finance officer Datuk A Rahim Jusoh here today.
Azemi said the system had been developed over the past three years and had been improved from time to time.
Meanwhile, Azemi also advised the relevant government departments and agencies in flood-prone states, such as Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, to be more serious in preserving and protecting their records, documents and references from being damaged during floods.
He said this was because about 70,000 important records and important documents were badly damaged and could not be saved during the floods that hit Terengganu in 2013.
"During the massive flood in Kelantan in 2014, approximately 280,000 important materials, records and documents were destroyed, which is indeed a big loss," he added. — Bernama
