SERDANG: The concept of urban farming will be introduced in the People's Housing Programme (PPR) next year to promote stratified agriculture especially at home, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar (pix).
He said this during his visit to one of #MAHA2016's latest attractions on Monday, the Garden District, which combines the elements of base materials until they become products or services.
The district's aim is to attract visitors to produce their own food or products that can be consumed or used in their daily life, thus reducing their household expenses.
"The PPR Lembah Subang Satu will be selected for the pilot implementation of the concept which is to create a transformation in the lives of the PPR residents, via farming in their residential areas.
"If one area PPR has 300 doors (houses), just imagine if each were to plant three chilli plants. If they are not selling them, they can consume the chilli themselves," he added.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who was also present, said the ministry would discuss with the Housing and Local Government Ministry on an inter-parliamentary competition in the Klang Valley next year.
#MAHA2016 (Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism) is expected to attract more than three million visitors, locally and abroad.
Themed Our Food Our Future, the biennial event where all the nation's best agriculture products and materials are displayed, is being held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park, Serdang (MAEPS) and will run for 11 days until Dec 11. — Bernama
