MALACCA: The partially-damaged Pasar Besar Melaka in Peringgit will be demolished to make way for the construction of a new market, estimated to cost RM25 million.

State Housing, Local Government and Enviroment Committee chairman Datuk Ismail Othman said the decision was made considering the facilities available in the area, like the Melaka Sentral Terminal.

He said based on a preliminary report on the Pasar Besar Melaka by the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram), the damage to the building was more to technical faults.

"The new market will be built after we receive the full report from Ikram and action will be taken on the contractor concerned," he added.

He said the new market would be equipped with modern facilities and traders operating at the Pasar Besar Melaka would be relocated to the new building. — Bernama
