KLANG: Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wants groups hiding behind the names of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to cease actions which can trigger disturbances and threaten the stability and security of the country.
The Selangor Sultan said such antics must be stopped without any compromise to give confidence to the people, foreign investors and foreign tourists.
"I can see there are groups hiding behind the names of NGOs who seek to create confusion in society.
"It is my aspiration to see the multiracial people of Selangor continue fostering the spirit of solidarity, give-and-take and mutual respect, specifically in matters of race, religion and political ideology," he said.
The Sultan was speaking at an investiture ceremony in conjunction with his 71st birthday celebration at Istana Alam Shah, here, today.
The ceremony saw the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah conferred the Darjah Kerabat Selangor Yang Amat Dihormati.
The Sultan also conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Ahli Kegemilangan Sukan Selangor to 2016 Paralympic Games gold medallist Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli, bowling veteran Shalin Zulkifli, cyclist Mohd Rizal Tisin, gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi and diver Chew Yiwei.
In his speech, the Selangor Sultan also urged the state leadership to take heed of the downfall of governments in the past due to leaders who were of weak character, weak faith and practices, and failing to curb corruption.
He said it could be disastrous for Selangor if values like trustworthiness were eroding in society, especially among leaders who abused their power and position, besides being involved in misappropriation and corrupt practices.
The Sultan also said that sensitive issues related to religion and beliefs on any community must be handled wisely to avoid misunderstanding and disrupting racial harmony. — Bernama
