PETALING JAYA: It is set to be a momentous occasion for Malaysia tomorrow as the country welcomes its new Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V (pix), who is described by many as the people's ruler.
The eldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra, who was born on Oct 6, 1969, was chosen as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the 243rd (special) Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara on Oct 14, succeeding Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
Previously known as Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, Sultan Muhammad V was made the Crown Prince (Tengku Mahkota) of Kelantan on Oct 6, 1985, before being proclaimed as the 29th Sultan of Kelantan on Sept 13, 2010.
He was appointed as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 12, 2011.
Sultan Muhammad V, who is described as a king of the people, often refers to himself as "kita" when meeting the people in the state.
He is also active in going down to the ground to meet the people of Kelantan, including in the more rural areas and orang asli settlements in Gua Musang and Jeli.
Sultan Muhammad V also prefers to don the Malay traditional costume, namely the Baju Melayu, with kain pelikat (sarong cloth) and kopiah (skullcap) or jubah (robe) when making these visits.
He also sparked the idea for the Walkathon D'Raja Kelantan programme which managed to enter the Malaysia Book of Records in 2011 when it drew about 21,000 participants.
Sultan Muhammad V's popularity among the rakyat grew when he was pictured driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle alone after Kelantan was hit by massive floods in 2014.
Sultan Muhammad V received his early education at Sekolah Sultan Ismail I in Kelantan and Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, before enrolling in the Oakham School Rutland, England until 1989.
He then pursued diplomatic studies at the St Cross College, Oxford and later at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies until 1991.
The eldest of four siblings, Sultan Muhammad V is also the patron for the Yayasan Sultan Kelantan and the chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.
His three younger siblings are the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Dr Muhammad Faiz Petra, 42, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, 38, and Tengku Amalin A'ishah Putri, 32.
Apart from filling his time by reading, the people's ruler is also known to be active in various sports and military organisations, as well as an animal lover.
