KEMAMAN: Do not speculate on an accident which claimed the lives of six members of a family at Km288.6 of the East Coast Highway II (LPT2) here yesterday, says Terengganu Infrastructure and Public Facilities Committee chairman Rosli Othman.
He said the incident was believed to have occurred due to tyre problems and not because of the highway condition.
He urged the public to stop speculating on the crash and let the authorities conduct their investigations to determine the cause.
"The public should not circulate their speculation on the cause of the accident as it gives more pain to the family," Rosli told reporters following a visit to the Kemaman Hospital's forensic unit here last night, where the remains of the victims were kept.
The Kemasik state assemblyman helped the family of the deceased by providing transportation for the remains to be taken from Marang to Shah Alam for burial.
In the 5.30pm incident near the Chukai toll plaza exit, the six family members perished when the Hyundai Starex MPV they were travelling in, skidded into a road divider before hitting a pillar of a bridge.
The accident also saw four other members of the family, including the driver, sustain serious injuries.
Rosli said his quarters would repair the highway or erect more signboards if investigations indicated the crash was due to the highway condition.
The state government had also identified several areas with puddles of water along the route and would take immediate action, he added. — Bernama
