KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Muhammad V (pix), who ascended the throne today as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is a courteous ruler who mingles easily with the people.
International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, whom Bernama approached recently, described Sultan Muhammad V as a moderate person who had endeared himself to the people of Kelantan.
He noticed the moderate personality of Sultan Muhammad V when attending some of the breaking-of-fast and 'terawih' prayer events at several mosques in the state during Ramadan.
"The Sultan seemed at ease sitting with the local people, a quality which the people always remember," he said and congratulated His Majesty on being appointed the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Sultan Muhammad V, 47, took the oath of office as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in a ceremony steeped in tradition at the Balairong Seri (Throne Room) of Istana Negara, today.
The eldest sibling of Sultan Ismail Petra, the Sultan was named Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra and used the title Sultan Muhammad V after being installed the 29th Sultan of Kelantan on Sept 13, 2010.
Mustapa, who is the Jeli Member of Parliament, said he is awed by the personality of Sultan Muhammad V and described his majesty as a friendly and approachable person who is compassionate about his subjects.
This was reflected when Sultan Muhammad V went to visit flood victims at several locations during the severe floods that hit Kelantan in 2014.
Mustapa believed the experience garnered by Sultan Muhammad V as the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan and then as the Sultan of Kelantan would come in useful in shouldering the responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. — Bernama
