RM182,700 worth of firecrackers, fireworks seized in Kedah

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle firecrackers and fireworks worth RM182,700 in Pendang last Friday (Dec 9).
Its director Datuk Abdul Latif Abdul Kadir said customs personnel seized the contraband from a container, following an inspection at the Pendang Toll Plaza.
He said the container driver carried a Customs import form declaring that the vehicle was carrying 1,500 bags of fertiliser but what was found inside was only 68 bags of the goods.
"Various types of firecrackers and fireworks, weighing 7,166kg were found hidden behind the 68 bags of fertilizer," he told a press conference here today.
The unpaid import duty on the goods amounted to RM107,793, he said adding that the 35-year-old driver and 22-year-old co-driver were arrested to facilitate investigations. — Bernama
