KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Muhammad V, who took his oath of office as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong last Tuesday, today performed his Friday prayer at the National Mosque.
The prayer was led by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who also acted as the khatib (a person who delivers the Friday sermon).
International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed also performed the Friday prayer at the mosque, as well as 10,000 others.
In the special sermon, with the title "Yang di-Pertuan Agong: Pillar of Islam", Asyraf Wajdi said the country's royal institution has a special place in the society as it serves as the pillar for justice and stability of the people.
He likened His Majesty to a tree that provided protection for the people.
"Meanwhile, the people are like the roots, whose responsibility is to remain loyal to His Majesty and not to betray him for as long as he is loyal to Allah and the prophet," he added.
Asyraf Wajdi said the uniqueness of the constitutional monarchy system that is practised in Malaysia served as the pillar of strength and unity of the ummah in the country.
"The constitutional monarchy is not only a symbol of a sovereign, free and independent country, but also a symbol of the unity of the people of various races," he added.
Asyraf Wajdi expressed confidence on the appointment of Sultan Muhammad V as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong ke-15 and as the head of state and religion.
Sultan Muhammad V, 47, replaces the Sultan Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, whose term as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong ended last Monday. — Bernama
