'One in four immigrants in the country is illegal'

KUALA LUMPUR: One in every four immigrants in this country is illegal, the Dewan Negara was told today.
"From Jan 1 until Dec 18 this year, some 10,554 operations were conducted where it was found 165,944 illegal immigrants were checked and 49,222 of them have been successfully arrested under various offences under the Immigration Act.
"Additionally, up to Nov 30, there are 1,856,869 legal immigrants that has been noted. (Therefore) to state there are 41% of that total figure is incorrect.
"The total figure of illegal immigrants is 218,934, or, 11.79%," he said.
He was responding to Senator Datin Rahimah Mahamad's query to a claim that for every ten foreigners who have permits, seven do not have it which covers 41% of the total number of foreign workers in the country.
