Bersih 2.0, Suaram wants Suhakam to probe alleged human rights abuse under SOSMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) have submitted a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to investigate alleged claims of human rights' abuse under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said in the memorandum, they also recommended that Sosma be repealed as it was in conflict with too many human rights' principles and the federal constitution.
Speaking to reporters after handing over the memorandum to Suhakam representatives at their office at Menara Tabung Haji here today, she said that the findings of the investigations, actions and recommendations of the commission on the complaints should be made public.
Maria also claimed that Bersih had documented more than 100 cases where detainees arrested under Sosma were badly treated during their detention.
Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy, who was also present, said the organisation expressed concern over the rampant use of laws that permitted detention
without trial.
He added they wanted Suhakam to take immediate action to deal with these human rights' abuses.
Former Batu Kawan Umno division vice-chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, Bersih 2.0 deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari were present when Suaram executive director Sevan and Maria handed over the memorandum to the Suhakam representatives.
