GEORGE TOWN: In what could be called a protest move, Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow made a dramatic entrance at his press conference today with his lips sealed with black tape.
He sat down without saying a word while his aides distributed his statement to journalists. They also distributed face masks with tape used to form an "X" over the mouth area.
Teng later removed the tape over his mouth when journalists asked if he was going to speak.
"Today is me, tomorrow is you, next day ... the common rakyat will get the same thing," he said.
The press conference was called after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng disclosed on Tuesday he had sent a notice of action for defamation to Teng on issues involving Pulau Jerejak.
The island has come under the spotlight after the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) sold its 49% stake in Tropical Island Resort Sdn Bhd, a 1997 joint venture between PDC and UDA Holdings Berhad, to a subsidiary of Ideal Properties for RM156 million this year.
Teng had questioned why the stake was sold as he claimed there was a RM220 million profit guarantee deal on the table in December 2013 but PDC has denied there was such an offer.
In his statement, Teng confirmed he received the legal notice from Lim's lawyers about three weeks ago and viewed the notice as "intimidation to stop me from dishing out more truths on Pulau Jerejak".
He said he will continue to provide information on the issue and other land deals in the coming months.
