Police detain man for illegal possession of firearms

SIBU: Police detained a 38-year-old man for possessing firearms without permit in a raid on a house in Lorong Tebu 1A3, Sungai Merah, near here on Monday.

Sibu police chief ACP Saiful Bahri Abdullah said during the raid, the team from Sibu district police Criminal Investigation Department's D4 Branch found a Beretta pump gun, 203 bullet shell of pump gun, 94 live bullets of pump gun, 12 modified bullets, two forearm grips, three buttstocks, various action components of pump gun, three set of serial number marking tools, laser pointer, and a long machete with casing.

Also found at the house was a Yamaha 135 LC motorcycle with fake registration number which was reported stolen in April, he said.

Saiful Bahri said initial investigation revealed that the pump gun belonged to the man's father with valid permit but the owner did not live there.

"The suspect has failed to give a statement on the bullet shells found in the yard of the house which also belonged to his father," he told reporters at the Central Sibu Police Station here today.
Saiful said the firearms permit was to look after the crops with only 10 bullets allowed to be kept by the owner or the permit holder at any one time.

The suspect had turned the house into a small workshop as he has a strong interest in firearms and admitted to attempting to make firearms and bullets, he added.

Saiful said the man, who tested positive for Amphetamine, had been remanded for two days to facilitate investigations under Section 8A of the Firearms Act 1960 and Section 411 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
