Miss Tourism beauties spur Langkawi to create two Malaysian records

LANGKAWI: Two new Malaysian records were created in Langkawi today with the help of 60 contestants of the Miss Tourism International 2016 World Final.

The beauties scaled the Langkawi SkyBridge at Mount Machinchang, about 650m above sea level, before joining a tai chi session to create a record for the most number of nations to perform the art at the highest altitude.

Another record which made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) came when they joined in for the most number of nations performing silat, a Malay traditional martial art, at a similar altitude.

Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Azizan Noordin received the certificates to acknowledge the feats from MBR Senior Research Journalist, Nurasyikin Ramli.

Speaking to reporters later, Azizan said the achievements had boosted the position of the Langkawi cable car product and the island itself in the global tourism map.
He said the organisation of the Langkawi trip for the contestants had given a great impact in promoting tourism on the island as all the beauties had a big number of followers on social media.

"I was made to understand that they had over 60 million followers on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Even the contestant from Thailand (Pinicha Kitkasempongsa) alone had about four million followers," he said.

The trip to Langkawi was among the activities organised for the beauty pageant supported by Tourism Malaysia where the final will be held in Putrajaya on Dec 31.

Apart from the Langkawi Sky Bridge, the contestants were also brought to visit various tourist attractions including the Langkawi Craft Complex, Sunset Cruise, 3D Art Museum, Laman Padi and Tanjung Rhu beach. — Bernama
