MALACCA: The setting up of the one-stop Malacca Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) four years ago is seen as proof of the government's commitment to providing more efficient services to the public.

Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB) chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam who was responsible for the initiative in Malacca when he was Chief Minister, said the existence of the UTC saved time and money for the public in seeking services.

"The strategy of gathering various government agencies in one building has clearly offered the public convenience as they don't have to go to various locations to get things done.

"Besides that, the operation which extends to the weekend is especially of benefit to those who work from Monday to Friday," he told Bernama, here, today.

The Malacca UTC was officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak on June 23, 2012. It has 10 levels and is housed at the renovated Wisma Persekutuan after the shift to the Malacca International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh, here.
Mohd Ali said the country's first UTC located in Jalan Hang Tuah, however, needed to make some improvements to make it an outstanding one-stop service centre for the public.

"Therefore, I hope the Malacca UTC will continue to provide comfort to visitors, including addressing the issue of limited parking space," he added.

Currently, the Malacca UTC houses 70 government and private sector agencies including the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, PUNB, Tekun Nasional, Bank Simpanan Nasional, DMDI Finance House and Bank Rakyat.

It also has facilities like Klinik 1Malaysia, Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia, a public library, youth centre, fitness centre, meeting room and cyber cafe.

Bernama observed today that many people were taking advantage of their year-end holidays to deal with various matters at the UTC.

Among them was engineer Mohd Fadzli Mohd Fadzal, 32, who said that the establishment of the UTC was a good thing for the busy urban community as the services were available under one roof from 8am to 10pm and even on weekends.

Lecturer Azwan Azemi, 33, described the UTC as a creative and innovative idea in enhancing service delivery, which the public should take advantage of. — Bernama
