CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Illegal land clearing was not the cause of sudden flash floods and a landslide here on Christmas day, said Cameron Highlands district police chief DSP Hasadid A. Hamid.
He said the landslide was caused by a heavy downpour, adding that no incidents of illegal land clearing had been detected at the affected areas.
"It was a natural disaster and it was beyond our control as there was excessive rainfall on that day," he told reporters after visiting the TNB Sharples bungalow here today.
The bungalow was hit by a landslide on Sunday forcing a family of 13 to evacuate the premise. Four cars were also damaged in the incident.
The heavy rain also caused a minor landslide which dragged down some trees on the Cameron Highlands-Tapah road which blocked accessibility near the Bharat Tea plantations in Tanah Rata.
Hasadid also assured tourists that the highland resort is still safe for visitors and urged people not to be influenced by viral postings on social media.
"Only share stories that are verified by the government departments, agencies and relevant authorities," he added.
He said the Public Works Department, Civil Defence Department, District Fire and Rescue Department and the Cameron Highlands District office are monitoring hotspots for natural disasters.
"Cameron Highlands is a risky area and we always monitor places like the Bharat Tea Plantation, Bertam, Kuala Terla and Kg Raja whenever in rains," said Hasadid.
