Revellers in Peneng urged not to go overboard in celebrating new year

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have urged revellers ushering 2017 on Saturday night not to go overboard with their celebrations.

Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridaltrash Wahid said his men will closely monitor popular countdown hotspots to prevent any untoward incidents.

No roads will be closed in this (northeast) district," he told theSun when contacted today.

Thousands are expected to throng popular places such as Gurney Drive, the Esplanade, Pesiaran Karpal Singh and many malls, hotels and beaches at the state to herald the beginning of new year this Saturday night.

In BALIK PULAU, Southwest district police chief Supt Annuar Musa said they too have deployed some 250 policemen to ensure celebrations are held peacefully in places such as Queensbay Mall and Batu Maung.

"We advise people not to leave their valuables in their vehicles and to carpool to reduce traffic congestion," he added.

In BUKIT MERTAJAM, Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid told revellers to keep a cool head in celebrating the beginning of the year.

He said police will be present at Icon City and Sunway as these areas were indetified to be famous spots for new year revellers.

At NIBONG TEBAL, South Seberang Perai district police chief Supt Shafee Samad said his men were on the alert to respond to any untoward situations.
