Verily and Nikon join forces to fight eye disease

THE former Google Life Sciences division Verily and the technology manufacturer Nikon are working together to improve methods of detecting diabetes-related eye diseases.
Diabetic retinopathy and macular edema are two of the leading causes of blindness in adults. Verily and Nikon have entered into a partnership to improve the screening processes for these diseases and help early detection.
While details of the collaboration have not been specified, Nikon (including its subsidiary Optos) will use its experience in optical engineering and precision manufacturing, as well as its ultra-widefield technology, while life sciences research and engineering body Verily will be tasked with creating the necessary machine-learning technology.
