PETALING JAYA: The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has set up an internal investigations team to probe the New Year's Day fireworks show mishap at the Pandamaran Sports Complex in Port Klang yesterday.
The incident which saw several fireworks shooting into the crowd instead of going off in the sky left 14 victims including four children with minor injuries and burns as a result.
MPK president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin said that the council will bear the cost of treatment of those injured during the Fiesta Gegar Klang 2016 show.
"The police, Fire Department, medical and civil defence personnel were present throughout the programme when the unexpected incident occurred.
"All victims had received outpatient treatment at the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) and were allowed to leave following treatment," he said in a statement.
Having visited the victims at the hospital, Mohamad Yasid also pledged to monitor the recovery of the victims.
"Despite the incident, all activities and programmes planned for New Year will continue as usual," he added.
Videos of the incident which occurred just after midnight showed several fireworks exploding on the ground where the spectators had gathered to watch the display.
The show which was attended by nearly 15,000 spectators saw them run for safety as the rockets went off around them.
Following the incident, seven fire fighters from the Port Klang fire station and medical personnel were also involved in aiding the victims.
Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, Mohd Sani Harul said the department has yet to determine the cause of the incident.
"We will conclude our report of the incident in two weeks," he said.
