5,333 summonses issued on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day

KUALA LUMPUR: A whopping 5,333 summonses were issued on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day as part of a traffic operation known as "Op Terancang Ambang Tahun Baharu 2017".
The operation was focused at five zones in the Klang Valley and encompassed the East Coast Expressway One and Two, North-South Expressway, Kesas Highway, Elite Highway, Damansara-Puchong Highway, Sprint Highway and SILK Highway.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department principal assistant director Supt Mustafa Bakri Salleh revealed that the highest number of summonses meted out were for speeding.
2,832 out of the total summonses were for speeding which included 179 lorries and 83 buses.
Other offences included driving without license (151), expired road tax (124), vehicle registration plate issues (176), and bikers not using motorcycle lanes (136).
Out of 2,951 motorist inspections, eight tested positive for drugs and seven for drunk driving.
The operation was carried out by 178 traffic personnel and 45 officers from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK).
