KLANG: The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) did not apply for a permit to hold a fireworks display during New Year's Eve 2017 celebration at Pandamaran Sports Complex, here last night.
South Klang district police chief ACP Alzafny Ahmad said police would conduct a thorough investigation of the incident which left 14 people injured.
"All the victims were receiving outpatient treatment and have been discharged from the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital here," he said in a statement through WhatsApp here today.
The fireworks display was a part of the Gegar Klang Fiesta organised by MPK held from Dec 30 and scheduled to end today.
In addition to fireworks, other programmes scheduled during the fiesta were booths selling all types of goods; food trucks; clown show; motorcycle show; aerobics and leisure cycling.
Alzafny said MPK as the organiser should have applied for a permit to hold the fireworks display.
In last night's incident, 14 people — 10 adults and four children — suffered burns caused by fragments of exploded fireworks.
It was understood that instead of firing into the sky, the fireworks exploded on the ground.
Earlier, MPK president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Dugan said in a statement that the council would set up an internal investigation team to investigate the incident.
Mohamad Yasid said security measures were the council's priority throughout the fireworks display which was attended by 15,000 people. — Bernama
