The pain of going green

PETALING JAYA: Most eateries in Petaling Jaya have stopped using polystyrene containers after the state enforced the ban on the containers.
Based on checks by theSun, most outlets have started packaging take away orders in papers, paper boxes, recyclable containers and other forms of biodegradable containers.
"This is a good move by the authorities as it is better for the environment. But the problem is the alternatives to polystyrene containers are more expensive.
"The price of polystyrene containers range from RM6-8 for 100 pieces, these transparent containers are about RM20-22 for 100 pieces. It is quite expensive," said a vendor at the SS2 hawker area here.
He said he has not increased prices yet, but may do so if he is unable to cope with the expected increase in cost.
He added that some of the vendors who used to use polystyrene containers are now packing their food in small plastic bags used for drinks to save on cost.
Fast food outlets and food chain stores including popular 'mamak' joints like Pelita and Syed Bistro have customised boxes for take outs.
"There was sufficient notice period from the authorities and the company had enough time to prepare. We fully support the move as it benefits the environment," an employee at Pelita SS2 told theSun.
To cope with the additional cost, some outlets are charging RM1 per take away.
"We support the move, but we are a small business and just started also. Customers who do not want to pay the extra RM1 can dine in," said the owner to a local cafe who prefers to be anonymous.
The ban of polystyrene has been enforced this year through the by-laws of each local council, where those applying for or renewing their trading licence must agree to the terms forbidding them to use polystyrene.
