KUALA BERANG: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has assured that food supply in the two flood-hit states, namely Terengganu and Kelantan, is sufficient should the disaster stretch up to one month.
Its director-general, Datuk Zulkiply Ramly said the department had prepared in advance by storing the food supply at its forward bases and depots which had been identified before this.
"Alhamdulillah (Thank God), although the floods occur in the two states, the delivery and distribution of food supplies have gone well.
"We have two large food supply depots in Marang, Terengganu and Kemumin, Kelantan, enough for one month's supply should the floods recur," he told reporters after visiting flood victims at the Kampung Getang relief centre, here, today.
Zulkiply said the experience in facing the massive floods in the two states in 2014 had taught the department to be better prepared for this year.
"We have also collaborated with three hypermarkets in obtaining food supply," he said, adding that the department had its forward bases in each state and mini depots in all districts.
Meanwhile, Zulkiply said a large-scale relief centre, namely SMK Matang, Hulu Terengganu had been identified to accommodate the large number of flood victims in the district.
"This centre can house up to 2,000 evacuees and three local suppliers can deliver food to the depots and the relief centre, if needed," he said.
Zulkiply also praised the department's officers, staff and volunteers for carrying out their work according to the standard operating procedure set. — Bernama
