KLANG: Police are looking for the supplier of the aerial fireworks that exploded on the ground and injured 16 people at a new year celebration in Port Klang.
Klang Selatan Police chief ACP Alzafny Ahmad said today the supplier was being sought following the arrest of four staff of the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and a member of the public between Wednesday and early yesterday.
He declined to say whether the member of the public was the person who had set off the fireworks.
Twelve adults and four children were injured just after midnight last Saturday when aerial fireworks exploded on the ground at the Pandamaran Sports Complex.
"The four MPK staff, aged between 30 and 40, are from various departments and we are investigating their involvement in the incident.
Police are also trying to find out why MPK did not apply for a permit to hold the fireworks display," he said to reporters after handing out school paraphernalia to 25 pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Seri Andalas here.
Alzafny said the five men were being remanded until Sunday to help in the investigation.
The fireworks display was part of the Fiesta Gegar Klang 2016 event organised by MPK from Dec 30 to Jan 1 at the complex. — Bernama
