GEORGE TOWN: Fomer Bukit Aman Deputy Director of the Strategic Planning, Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department, Commissioner Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye has been appointed as Penang's new police chief today.
He replaces Commissioner Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab, 58, who will be the new Integrity and Standards director at Bukit Aman.
The handing-over of duties ceremony here was witnessed by federal police management director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Chuah, 60, said he will continue the excellent standard of service set by his predecessor.
Chuah served as Malacca police chief from 2010 to 2016.
Meanwhile, Abdul Ghafar in his last press conference as state police chief said police detained a 41-year-old car salesman at Gelugor last night and seized drugs worth RM1.5 million.
He said police also seized seven slabs of syabu weighing 7.3kg, 15,000 Erimins 5 pills and 20,000 Ecstasy pills during the raid.
"The man was walking towards his house when he was arrested.
"We believe the drugs he possessed was meant for distribution in the local market and the neighbouring country," he said, adding that police also confiscated two BMWs, a Honda Accord and gold jewelllery worth RM764,000 during the operation.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
