KAJANG: Police arrested a 32-year-old woman for allegedly dumping a newborn baby in a drain near the Bukit Kajang toll plaza yesterday.
Kajang district deputy police chief Supt Mohd Sabri Abdullah said the baby boy was discovered by a toll plaza staff member who was changing the tyre of his employer's car near the area at about 5.40pm.
"The man was alerted by the cries of the baby and eventually found the baby in a drain.
"He saw the baby boy in the drain, with his umbilical cord still attached," he said in a statement today.
The man then alerted the police immediately and lodged a report.
The baby, who had scratches on his thigh, chest and cheeks, was later taken to the Kajang hospital for further treatment.
Following the incident, police arrested the woman who is from Simpang Balak Kajang here, believed to be the mother, at the same hospital to assist the investigation.
"We will request the remand order as soon as possible," added Mohd Sabri.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by the parents or person having care of the child.
