Press Digest - Seven more AES cameras to be installed in crash hotspots

PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras will be installed in seven crash hotspots, including Pagoh, Johor, where a fatal bus accident claimed the lives of 13 people recently; and Kampar, Perak.
He told Sin Chew Daily in a report published today that should there be requests, more AES cameras will be installed in other areas.
He said non-governmental organisations, highway authorities, and local governments have made requests for new AES cameras to be installed.
Some local authorities requested for AES cameras to be installed at interchanges where accidents have occurred frequently as well as at traffic light junctions.
The AES has never been cancelled and the existing 14 AES cameras are still in operation, Liow said, adding that more will be installed based on requests.
However, he refuted claims on social media that more than 200 AES cameras will be installed throughout the country.
He said so far, the ministry only received requests from seven bodies, and has issued clear directives to various departments concerned including the Public Works Department, police and Land Public Transport Commission.
"The Transport Ministry installs AES cameras only at the request of local governments, non-governmental organisations and the public, and not according to its own whims," he said.
He added the AES has been incorporated into the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas). The other element of Awas is the Demerit Points System.
