GEORGE TOWN: Jailed former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was greeted with cries of "Reformasi" after making his first appearance at the Penang Court complex this morning.
Arriving at about 9am, many PKR supporters gathered holding banners and placards shouting for Anwar to be released upon seeing him being heavily-escorted inside courtroom.
Several Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel were spotted standing guard to prevent any untoward incident while policemen also making their rounds inside court complex.
Roads at Lebuh Farquhar and Lebuh Light were also cordoned resulting in a traffic snarl.
Anwar's wife Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, his daughters Nurul Izzah Anwar and Nurul Nuha Anwar were in the court complex.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was accompanied by other state exco members to express their solidarity towards Anwar.
Anwar had filed a suit against the English daily, New Straits Times, and three other defendants over alleged defamatory remarks.
It was Anwar's first appearance in Penang after he was sentenced to five-year jail imprisonment over sodomy.
Anwar is currently serving jail term in Sungai Buloh after Federal Court on Feb 10, 2015 upheld his conviction and sentence imposed by Court of Appeal on March 7, 2014.
