BAGAN DATUK: The recent spate of arrests by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is proof that the graft-busting agency is going after the "sharks" and not the small fry.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the recent actions of the Commission shows that its new leadership is committed to eradicating corruption.
"The country's corruption practices index in the list of international bodies is high ... we want to bring it down ... the Commission should continue and not compromise," he told reporters after attending the declaration of Bagan Datuk as the 12th district in Perak today.
"Such action is good for the image of the country and we should not look into only development but also focus on the social aspects.
"We hope the ongoing investigation and arrest is not seasonal and isolated but will go on at all time.
"I am confident of MAAC's new leadership under chief commissioner Datuk Dzukifli Ahmad and his deputy Datuk Azam Baki whose capabilities will reduce the index," he added.
On the declaration of the new district, Ahmad Zahid who is also Bagan Datuk MP, said he hopes the overall development in Bagan Datuk known for tourism, agriculture and tourism will not forgo traditions.
"We need to have a balanced development and at the same time maintain the soul of the place."
He also stressed that any district or state that is developing will attract criticism from "antagonistic" people.
"Its is not being appreciated but only we know how important it is for the district," he added.
