Woman abducted from mall may be case of mistaken identity: Police

KUALA LUMPUR: Six men were arrested by police today over the abduction of a 25-year-old woman at the Setapak Sentral mall in Danau Kota here on Monday.
The woman who was freed by her captors about seven hours after being abducted at 10.20pm is believed to be a victim of mistaken identity.
Sources said after the woman was snatched by three men at a restaurant at the mall and driven away in a Toyota Alphard, she was questioned by her abductors of her identity.
It is learnt that when the suspects found she was not the one they were looking for, they made several calls on their cellphone before leaving her with another group of men at an undisclosed location.
She was then driven in another vehicle by the men who abandoned her by the road shoulder of the Damansara-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE).
Though she was unharmed, the victim suffered minor injuries to her hands when she struggled with her abductors during the abduction.
Police later found the Alphard which was a rented vehicle abandoned at an unknown location and launched a hunt for the suspects.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said today that police nabbed six suspects aged between 34 and 54 in Nilai, Batu Caves and Puchong.
He said all six suspects are self-employed and two of the have previous criminal records.
He said police are also trying to ascertain the motive of the suspects in pulling off the crime.
The woman had gone to the mall with her mother and was having a drink at a restaurant when she was dragged out by her abductors to a waiting car.
She put up a struggle and cried for help but though the incident was witnessed by passers-by, the suspects managed to escape with her.
Rusdi said a statement was also recorded from an individual who had rented out the Alphard to the suspects.
