PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Adenan Satem will be given a state funeral and be buried after zohor prayers today said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the chief minister had died of a heart attack at the Sarawak Hospital Heart Centre in Kota Samarahn at about 1.20pm after being admitted on Sunday.
Adenan took over from Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud as the chief minister on Feb 28, 2014.
"He will be laid to rest at the Samarian Muslim cemetery after zohor. The public will be able to pay their last respect from 10.30am at the Masjid Jamek," he said at a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Kuching.
He added that today has been declared a special state holiday to allow the public to pay their last respects to the chief minister.
Abang Johari said the state would also observe a seven-day mourning period, where flags would be flown at half-mast and all official events to be postponed.
In the last state election, the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president won the Tanjong Datu seat by defeating Jazolkipli Numan from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) with a 5,892-vote majority.
Adenan leaves a wife, Puan Seri Jamilah Anu, four daughters and one son.
Born in 1944 di Kuching, Sarawak, Adenan received his early education at Sekolah St Joseph, also in Kuching, before studying law at the University of
Adelaide, Australia.
Adenan, who was the fifth state chief minister and Barisan Nasional component. Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, has had a history of heart problems and four years ago underwent a surgery.
He had, last year, also spoken of how he thought he was going to die due to a heart complication.
"Three years ago, I was really sick. I was at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur and in Singapore. At that moment, I thought that I was already going. I called all my relatives, my children and grandchildren.
"They all came, and you when you call your families in, you surely the reason why.
I was ready to go then. But Allah is great, and I recovered and am back to normal,"
he told Bernama in an interview prior to the Sarawak state election last year.
Adenan was also known for his bold criticisms against the Federal government, among other things, calling it "stupid" for not recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
He had also warned that he would resign if Umno entered his state
